Mentoring for San Dieguito Union High School District Students

Blackburn Mentoring gives San Dieguito students one mentor who meets with them by video, helps them plan a demanding week and keeps the plan moving between sessions with short check ins. Because the district asks families to choose a high school in eighth grade, mentoring here often begins around that decision and continues through high school and beyond. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students, agree the goals and get regular updates.

Sessions for families in this area happen by video. In person sessions are available in Los Angeles for families who are there.

San Dieguito at a glance

San Dieguito Union High School District enrolled 11,864 students in grades 7 to 12 in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. It serves Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach, parts of Carlsbad and San Diego, and the Fairbanks Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe areas, and it receives students from five elementary districts: Cardiff, Del Mar Union, Encinitas Union, Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach, according to its Wikipedia entry.

So nearly every seventh grader arrives from a different district, often from a small elementary school, into a larger campus with more teachers and more independence. By the eighth grade high school decision and the start of ninth grade, a steady planning routine matters.

The high school selection process

The district’s high school selection regulation explains that eighth graders, along with new and returning students entering grades 9 to 11 who are not yet at a district high school, submit a high school selection online. The window opens in February and closes on the last day of March. The district has boundary high schools, where students attend based on address, and two non boundary academies that admit through selection and, when demand exceeds space, a random lottery.

  • There is no advantage to submitting early; every on time application has the same chance.
  • Selections cannot be changed after the deadline, and late applicants enroll at their boundary high school.
  • Students selected for an academy must complete registration by the March enrollment deadline or lose the spot.
  • Special education placement is decided by the IEP team, which includes parents.

A mentor does not choose a school for a family. What a mentor can do is help an eighth grader think honestly about how they learn best, what kind of schedule they handle well and what they want from high school, so the family’s conversation is grounded in the student’s own words. Read the regulation and the district’s current dates before you decide.

Graduation requirements and A to G

A district high school’s graduation requirements page, which says it aligns with the requirements for all district high schools, lists 40 credits of English, 30 of history and social science (world history, U.S. history, American government and economics), 30 of math, 20 of science (life and physical), 10 of visual or performing arts, 20 of physical education, 10 of practical arts or career technical education and 70 of electives, which adds up to 230 credits, plus the state health requirement. Confirm the requirements for your student’s class with the counselor.

One thing every San Dieguito family should know: finishing the district’s graduation requirements and being eligible for the University of California or California State University are not the same test. UC asks for 15 A to G courses with a grade of C or better, at least 11 of them done before senior year, and a 3.0 GPA for California residents, according to UC Admissions. Our free A to G checker and UC and CSU GPA calculator let a student see where they stand in a few minutes, and a mentor turns the gaps into a semester plan.

How mentoring supports San Dieguito students

  • The eighth grade decision. Help putting the student’s preferences into words before the February to March window.
  • A demanding course load. A sustainable plan that protects sleep through honors, AP, sports and activities.
  • Practical arts and electives. Seventy elective credits and a career technical requirement are room to explore. A mentor helps a student use them on purpose.
  • Leaving for college. The same mentor can continue by video through the first year away from home.
