Mentoring for Carlsbad USD Students and Families

Blackburn Mentoring gives Carlsbad Unified students one mentor who meets with them by video, helps them plan the week and keeps the plan moving between sessions with short check ins. For students who take on extra coursework outside the school day, at a community college, online or over the summer, a mentor helps make sure that ambition fits the week and actually counts where the student needs it to. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students, agree the goals and get regular updates.

Sessions for families in this area happen by video. In person sessions are available in Los Angeles for families who are there.

Carlsbad Unified at a glance

Carlsbad Unified enrolled 10,683 students in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. The district’s About page lists nine elementary schools, three middle schools, two comprehensive high schools and two other secondary programs across about 42 square miles serving parts of Carlsbad, Oceanside and San Marcos. It traces its schools’ roots to 1872, and its newer high school opened in the 2013 to 2014 school year.

Not every Carlsbad address is in Carlsbad Unified. Parts of southern Carlsbad are served by San Dieguito Union High School District for grades 7 to 12, according to that district’s Wikipedia entry, and other neighboring districts serve some edges of the city. Check your address with the district before you plan around a campus.

Courses outside high school: know the limits

Carlsbad Unified’s policy on outside coursework says no more than 40 credits from college courses, private institutions or charter schools may be transferred to the high school transcript, that a student must be enrolled in the district while taking the off campus class to receive credit, and that an off campus course used for a district graduation requirement may not satisfy UC, CSU, private college, out of state or NCAA requirements. Students are told to check with each institution they plan to apply to.

This is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when a motivated student signs up for a summer college course on their own. A mentor helps a student write down, before enrolling, what the course is for (graduation, A to G, college credit or interest), confirm it with the counselor and then fit the extra load into a realistic week.

Graduation requirements and A to G

Carlsbad Unified sets its own graduation requirements on top of the state minimums listed by the California Department of Education. One district program page lists 230 credits, but we could not verify a district wide total and subject breakdown for this guide, so confirm the requirements for your student’s class with the counselor.

One thing every Carlsbad family should know: finishing the district’s graduation requirements and being eligible for the University of California or California State University are not the same test. UC asks for 15 A to G courses with a grade of C or better, at least 11 of them done before senior year, and a 3.0 GPA for California residents, according to UC Admissions. Our free A to G checker and UC and CSU GPA calculator let a student see where they stand in a few minutes, and a mentor turns the gaps into a semester plan.

How mentoring supports Carlsbad students

  • Extra courses on purpose. A clear reason for each outside course, checked with the counselor before the student enrolls.
  • Ninth grade habits. A weekly planning routine set early, before the workload rises in the later high school years.
  • Athletes and busy schedules. If NCAA eligibility matters, a mentor keeps the question of which courses count on the list for counselor meetings.
  • Military families. Families who move often keep the same mentor through each school change, by video.
  • Senior year and beyond. The same mentor can stay with a student through applications and into the first term away.

Sessions run by video on a schedule that fits the school week, with early morning, evening and weekend times available. Between sessions the mentor checks in briefly by text so the plan keeps moving. In person sessions happen only in Los Angeles, so families who spend time there can meet in person when it helps.
